This shoot was originally done for PE extraordinaire Lauren Winfield at Fortune, though it never ran in the magazine. So it’s always a little weird when images are picked up to go with an entirely different story, but all the more incentive for making classic imagery. A year long embargo is standard for images that don’t run, and that is quite a bit of time for people, looks, etc. to change. Great use of the sheet of plastic in the beauty dish case in place of a wind machine! Huffin and Puffin. Great assistants (Ricardo Richey and Beau Blackburn) make great images.

Loving the design they are up to at Bloomberg’s Businessweek. And David Carthas (DOP) is a gem to work with. I’m pretty convinced he has a sleeping bag under his desk. He called me for the shoot first thing in the morning and I was exiting Rengstorff Road a few hours later. Thanks to my lovely on call assistant. And wait a sec, there’s Salar (YouTube) again!

On assignment for Bloomberg Markets Magazine January issue
Last fall I had yet another dream assignment. I know I say that all the time, but seriously. Photographing legendary wine makers and tasting legendary wine? I sometimes wonder if this is all a dream. Okay, maybe that’s the Pinot talking. But not only did I get to meet some of the most fascinating folks in the wine world, I was also lucky enough to shoot during the harvest, getting drunk off the sweet Cabernet in the air. I got schooled on everything from the optimal longitude and latitude for Pinot Noir to dry ice methods of fermenting. I even bought a web domain to start my Pinot blogging. Currently looking for contributors!

I’m not only totally thrilled to be a part of such an amazing group of photographers in this list, but am doubly thrilled that this powerful and important story receives another nod. Thank you June Moss, Crary Pullen and Kira Pollack.
June Moss
Photographed by Robyn Twomey for TIME
A veteran who participated in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, June Moss, 39, witnessed many of the war’s horrors firsthand. She was featured in an article about the unique health care problems that female veterans face and the difficulties they have in finding adequate treatment.

Had a great time photographing Jon Lech Johansen and Bram Cohen for this Time Magazine piece. Smart as hell and lovely to collaborate with. Jon, who wrote a program to decrypt DVD’s at 15 (!) and Bram who wrote BitTorrent at the old age of 26 have completely changed the way our world works. Subverting the system by offering efficient things for free. Heroes! Full of interesting factoids too. Bram makes all kinds of puzzles, including the puzzle ring you can see in the following photograph. He even made a rubik’s cube with gears. (whuh?!). And Jon made the bike in the pic below (with the wonderful assistant Dawn Pavli posing). Still had ash left over from burning man on it.
